Mindy Alper is an artist whose early life of extreme anxiety and depression was often expressed in her drawings, painting and sculpture.
Her hyper self-awareness allowed her to produce work that used humor and irony to describe her emotional state with powerful psychological precision.
She spent a 10-year period unable to speak or express her thoughts through words. During this time, her only manner of expression were her drawings. Often her observations were expressed through a character that stood for her. It had many looks, some resembling Alper more than others. The character allowed the work to be extremely personal while she hid in plain sight.
Some of her recent work is also self-portraiture but, as a sign of her emergence from those dark years, these paintings are a very clear and detailed exploration of her face. The images are large and include every mark, fold and blemish. They are intense, seen by unblinking eyes that sometime stare back or through the viewer.
